The 3M Industrial Mineral Products Division recently created the 3M™ Smog-reducing Granules to help remove smog pollution (which exists in the form of nitrogen oxides or NOx) through the use of roofing shingles. These 3M roofing granules are integrated throughout the shingles’ surface, and are specifically designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating that’s applied to the base mineral of the granule. The specialized coating on the granule is activated by the sun’s UV rays, and is then able to blend seamlessly into various shingle color combinations. As the sun hits these shingles containing smog-reducing granules, radicals are then generated that transform nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions that then, in turn, improve the air quality. This smart solution for pollution mitigation can help to support communities in their efforts towards emission reduction across the country.
